Arrows

The arrows within the Enneagram show the connections and movements between different types. These directional lines are an important part of the system, illustrating how our patterns can shift and express themselves in different circumstances.

Each Enneagram type has movements in two directions: the forward arrow and the against arrow. These movements are an important part of the Enneagram system, showing how the patterns of each type can be expressed in different ways.

Stress arises when we experience demands and pressure, be it from our own sense of duty or from external expectations imposed by colleagues, bosses, family, or friends. When our sense of freedom feels threatened, tension can build.

Within the Enneagram, the forward arrow indicates a type’s Stress Point. It is important to recognise that stress does not always bring out the worst in us; at times, it can bring forward strengths and qualities that help us respond to a situation.

For example, the forward arrow of Type Nine is Six. When Nines are stressed, they may demonstrate some of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours associated with Type Six. When Sixes are stressed, they may display qualities of Type Three. When Threes are stressed, they may show thoughts, feelings, and behaviours similar to those of Type Nine.

The same pattern applies to the other types. Stressed Ones may display some Type Four qualities; Fours may display Type Two qualities; Twos, Type Eight qualities, etc.

Relaxed Points

Relaxation occurs when we feel safe, supported, and free from excessive demands or pressure. In these moments, we may have greater capacity to access qualities that help us feel more open, balanced, and resourceful.

Within the Enneagram, the against arrow indicates a type’s Relaxed Point. It highlights how, when we feel more at ease or supported, we may draw on different qualities and ways of responding.

For example, the against arrow of Type Nine is Three. When Nines are relaxed, they may demonstrate some of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours associated with Type Three. When Threes are relaxed, they may display qualities of Type Six. When Sixes are relaxed, they may show thoughts, feelings, and behaviours similar to those of Type Nine.

The same pattern applies to the other types. Relaxed Ones may display some Type Seven qualities; Sevens may display Type Five qualities; Eights, Type Two qualities etc.
